San Miniato al Monte

The church of San Miniato al Monte is often described as one of the finest examples of Romanesque churches in all of Italy. With a famous façade, historical setting, and spectacular views it’s difficult to disagree. The basilica San Miniato al Monte, located near the Piazzale Michelangelo, is one of the highest points of the city, so naturally it offers some of the best views. However, most certainly do not simply come here just for the panoramas. This church has been described as one of Italy’s finest Romanesque buildings. Built between 1018 and 1063, it survives virtually in its original state. In the 17th century, it was used as a hospital and a poor house. In 1924, the Olivitan Benedictine monks moved in. There are ten still living and worshipping here today.
