Spring Equinox and partial eclipse of the sun at Santa Maria Novella

March 20, 2015 people from all over the world  gathered in Santa Maria Novella to witness the Spring equinox, something that happens around every 20 years. Santa Maria Novella, the museum of Galileo, the Istituto Geografico Militar have all collaborated to keep the 16th century astronomer and cosmographer,Ignazio Danti, legacy alive by marking the path that the sun will take using the same technique as Danti.

Danti drilled a small hole in the church rose window and followed the path of the sun, which helped him determined the precise date of Easter.
