Florence’s Wine Windows

The wooden doors that you are most likely to walk by used to be an important part of florentine life. The little openings are replicas of the main entrances and are found adjacent to the main doors, they were decorated, had a little knocker, and were found all over the city.

The purpose of these miniature doors were to serve wine to florence residents. With a knock and a few coins one could receive a glass of red wine from a local vineyards. The owners would serve their excess wine to the public through the wine doors. Today, many of the wine doors are covered, turned into name plaques, or kept the same to shed light into the culture and history of these wooden wine windows.
