Everyone talks about the Italian Mafia, the reputation of powerful, and violent men. However, nobody has really taken the time to talk about the women in the mafia.
Photographer Francesco Francaviglia located a group of women that came to be known as the fasting women after 22 years that they went on a hunger strike to protest the events of the Mafia. Francaviglia captured the history of the Mafia like never seen before through the eyes of these women. Displayed at the Uffizi Gallery, the photographs speak about how these women stood up to the mafia’s violence, and the history of Italy.
The exhibition captures the real story of the horror each women went through, and even though the photographer uses the same background, each women is unique, and serves as a reminder of the power these women still have today.
